Unrealistic Expectations and Self-Absorption

We all have those moments where we want something so much that unrealistic expectations are created. When our desire gets to that point, we often put ourselves in a bind with people around us and with our own personal values.  This is because a fixation on the outcome ends up overshadowing all else.

Adding Perspective

As such, when things do not turn out the way we want them to, energy gets focused on personal disappointment, the fear of missing out, and the proverbial “what ifs”. This feeds into the  temptation to cut corners and become selfish to further one’s agenda to alleviate the discomfort and to try to pursue whatever perceived happiness/accomplishment we think we will gain from that course of action.

Thoughts for the Week

So, it becomes important to check in with yourself and your surroundings (self-reflection) at each stage of a goal to make sure you’re on the right path. This will help to keep a clear and level head pertaining to one’s main objectives. And it also prevents you from unintentionally wreaking havoc and burning bridges all in the name of high expectations because it’s easy to get blinded by ambition and desire. Ironically, it’s usually when we call upon others’ skills and expertise that we fly higher as opposed to being the sole top dog.
